Well, I'm mostly concerned about the "issues" we've had with the smaller Austin events.

And I'd also prefer to keep Flipside small as well. :P

            Issues? Like what?

I think it's a bit late for Flipside to remain small. It's the largest burner regional in the US.

Get on austin chat and austin list. There's been talk of all the Decomp issues the past few weeks and Orfunner issues last year after the event.

Well, Flipside is small compared to the Nevada Regional. When it breaks 2500, there are all sorts of new issues to consider. Comparatively, it's small.

All I know is that I'm NOT going to Burning Man this year, and would rather keep it closer (and cheaper).

So, I guess I'm gonna have to jump through hoops on this thing called the "Internet" to find more info on Orphaner, eh?!

I can't find the old website, but it hadn't been updated for Orfunner last year anyway. There also used to be a Yahoo group, but its gone too.
Like Decomp and Afterburn, Orfunner is not official, all volunteer, and has no central planning authority. But if and when it comes together, the people on this tribe will surely tell. Until then, it is at the same place as Decomp, and will be the same weekend as The Big Burn, aka Labor day weekend.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

I was at decomp and there were some serious messes and whatnot. I feel that it is our responsibility, those of us who have been in the community longer, to help teach others, show them the way. How to be responsible for themselves, their stuff. Have respect for the earth on which we have been invited to celebrate, etc.

Sure, there are going to be problems. We note them and then do something different next time.

This year, Lightning in a Bottle had over 3,000 attendees. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from my friends who went.
                    • Than we need to ask ourselves – what is it that they are doing that we are not (at FlipSide)? I offered the idea of a garbage donation. People donate at least 1 trash bag and if a newbie attends, they are automatically given two trash bags when they pay & sign the release.

Maybe a “I promise not to leave trash behind” little note to sign – used as a reminder to take trash with you when you leave.
                      • I think it comes down to holding ourselves and others accountable. Anyone I invite to a Burn I educate on the responsibilities of membership in our community- do you all do the same? I see alot of people showing up who have no idea about the Ten Principles and who arrive expecting a just a party (and who don't bring enough for themselves, much less to share.) I love my non-burner friends, but not all of them are cut out for the Burnerverse.

This paradigm will only endure so long as we maintain a high enough percentage of folks who "get it"; people who throw beer bottles in the creek (as a friend observed someone do during Flipside) and who show up to abuse our collective hospitality are exactly what's wrong with Mundania. Inclusiveness is a wonderful concept, but in any culture there's a threshold beyond which Community begins to unravel. I potentially won't go back to the Playa after this year because the asshole threshold has been surpassed (and I'm not alone in this!), and I think that's a real shame.

It only takes a small number of asshats to ruin it for everyone, as I'm sure ya'll are well aware- how do we keep Flipside from changing into something we don't want to have any part of?

                        Trash-talkingly,
                        Major Tom

"expecting a party / not all of them are cut out for the Burnerverse."
"show up to abuse our collective hospitality"
                          "Limiting / avoiding asshole threshold"

These are NOT accusing statements or questions

I was lucky, I have Burner friends and attended Burn events prior to FS so I knew what was expected but for those who have not and do not know….

How or where do these people get these ideas?
                          - Where do they learn of FlipSide?
                          - Are they not told of the 10 Ps?
                          - Do they simple not care if they were told?
                          - If they don't care... should we or do we have the right to ban them or encourage them not to return?

                          - How can we re-enforce the 10 Ps?
                          - Do we need to be blunt and build a 6-foot sign at the entrance stating the 10 Ps?
                          - Should a flyer go out with tickets stating the 10 Ps? Cost & waste of extra paper would really suck
                          - Create a Newbie Night prior to ticket sales explaining what is expected or explaining concerns, cares ect... virtual & in person at the warehouse?

One thought this discussion has given me is that I will look into having custom trash bags created. Something that says "leave no trace behind" and giving them out to any newbie who doesn't know or just wants one. I haven't really thought this idea out so this may be too costly as I do plan to have my own theme camp next year.

                          • Thanks for not flaying me for sharing, ya'll!! I really don't intend to be judgey or accusatory or anything- it just breaks my heart seeing people piss on something I love, and I'm pretty worried that there won't BE a Burn community if things continue in the direction they're headed!! I mean, think about how little cruelty it would take to totally change the vibe, for example.

Sierra, you raise very good questions. In my case, my friend who told me about Flipside didn't tell me much, but I did TONS of recon and research so I was prepared, at least somewhat.

From what I've observed, there's definitely a subset that's largely untrainable, regardless of our methods and gentleness. That said, I have to believe that most of us come around eventually, even if we start out being asshats. The great majority of proto-burners are wonderful additions to the community, and in time DO come around, though I think it's safe to say that even veterans make mistakes, and some newbies are truly Burneriffic without any outside input.

It's hard to say what the correct approach might be, but spending money on printed materials is something I'm against, and not just because the people who most need to read the material simply WON'T no matter how easy we make it. Alex C. has a great idea called Adopt-A-Burner we're discussing on the DFW Burners Tribe and I really think that culturally the best and maybe only way to ensure our longevity is mentorship and accountability. Do we exile people for bad non-burny behavior? I'd say it depends on severity. Throwing a glass beer bottle in the creek is pretty heinous, and to my mind somewhere in that grey area...

Anyway, there's a beer calling my name- gotta drink it before it gets warm!!

                            Musingly,
                            Major Tom

just look at me now...all I did was go to this party in the hill country after my roomate was like 'hey man want to go camping?', and now years later I'm stuck out in the desert with dozens of crazed people with power tools. I should have a 9 to 5 and a house in westlake by now. I should have a nice girl and some kids and attend church every sunday. I should have torrid affairs with my secretary and get caught by my wife and be stabbed in front of my kids only to partially recover and remain somewhat crippled for the rest of my bitter existence. But NO! I'm in Gerlach, Nevada drinking whiskey on my day off from building a city. What a load of crap....I soo got the short end of the stick...

As to official dates, I'm not in the planning cadre, but it's usually Friday-Sunday the weekend of Burning Man, which in this case is August 29-31. Can I assume since yer asking that you won't be on the Playa this year? :(

yeah, I decided that--although I could most certainly arrange the time off with my professors--it would unduly delay my graduation date, keeping me in the life-limbo which is grad school even longer. This is the second year in a row that my education has kept me away... after making the trek 7 times in a row, it's a little strange.

but I'll be at orfunner, and I'll be at mischievia, and I'll be less hermit-y this year in Austin. Be warned.
          Happy MeL.

just some thoughts about orfunner being advertised to the masses:

we just don't have the volunteer infrastructure like they do at flipside...and i don't think people want that. people wanna come to orfunner to just chill out, etc.

so, peeps, please be careful about who you invite. they must be responsible for themselves and you are responsible for who you bring. i guarantee you and your friends don't wanna go to jail in a small town!!

of course we don't wanna deliberately exclude people, but if you want SAFETY and a good time, don't post the orfunner info on any lists or social-networking sites, pleeeeze.

if you do invite your buddies, pleeeeeeeeeze make them read the "rulez" on the orfunner website.
inform them about orfunner like you would about flipside.
some of the same stuff applies. like "leave no trace!!!"
      orfun.plasmator.net/

(also, Orfunner is *NOT* an AAR, LLC or BORG event...there ain't no affiliation)

come on out with your buddies and have a great and safe time.

      looking forward to seein' y'all.

There seems to be quite a huff going on within the community about OrFunner.

    Enough Said.

    Ten Principles

    The Ten Principles

For anyone who may not know.

    The Ten Principles

    NOTE: Copied from Burning Man

    1) Radical Inclusion
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

    2) Gifting
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value.

    3) Decommodification
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

    4) Radical Self-reliance
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.

    5) Radical Self-expression
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.

    6) Communal Effort
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction.

    7) Civic Responsibility
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. They must also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.

(In my opinion the most important)

    8) Leaving No Trace

Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them.

    9) Participation
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve bei
