Hi Flipside,
The LLC was recently approached with an interesting set of questions about the effigy. They brought these questions to the CC for further discussion. We all feel that this deserves broader community discussion, so the CC has scheduled a meeting for your feedback on 11/30/2009 at the AAR Warehouse at 7:42PM.

The main question is this: Should the effigy committee be allowed to consider an effigy design that would be constructed primarily of non-consumable parts? We wouldn't be removing the fire-art requirement. We would simply be loosening the rules to allow for an effigy made from more lasting materials. We discussed the pros and cons at length during the CC meeting this past Monday night, but we need more of your feedback before making any kind of recommendation to the LLC and Effigy Selection Committee on this.

If this sounds like something you're interested in chatting about, we're holding a meeting on this topic at the AAR Warehouse. 11/30/2009, 7:42PM.
As always, your feedback is welcome via email as well: cc@flames.burningflipside.com

The venue will be on the edge of the southeast side of town near the end of S. Congress. To start out it will be around a 1500 person venue. Over time that capacity will most likely increase. Were going to try and make this a more progressive and conscious venue. Were still looking for investors and also just to get the general word out into the community. If you have any ideas, comments, investors or just want to say hello. Please email me @ tms286@gmail.com. Thanks guys. Love

Tickets are $45 til the 20th, then $55 til October 5, when ticket sales end. There are NO TICKET SALES AT THE GATE!!

Please join us- we'd especially love to see folks who went to the Playa, who likely need to Decompress!!

Invitingly,
Major Tom

Hello all Texas burners! We have a 16 foot box truck that we are taking to BM. We would like to share space on this truck for people who need an inexpensive way to haul gear to the playa.

General Info:

-Space is first come first served.

-We will leave out of Austin on August 28th around but not before 3 PM but will except items to be hauled at our house for a week in advance (as long as they are items easily loaded onto the truck by two people).

-We will be at BM when the gates open.

-We camp at stag camp at 8:30 and fossil. Items on the truck can be picked up at that location (no personal delivery). You will need to unload your own gear.

-We will return on Sunday evening after the burn an plan on being in Austin on the 9th or 10th. Items can be picked up from our house in austin up to the 12th of September.

-Gas cost will be calculated using volume and weight. (We estimate most items will be 3-6 dollars per cubic foot. If we do not use all of the gas money it will be divided and returned to you.

-No explosive, flammable, or hazardous items. Sorry guys.

-No illicit substances.

-No perishable foods.

-We will fill water barrells up in Reno but prefer not to since this is a pain in my ass.

-All space will need to be reserved and paid for a week before departure. We will only except extra items on the 28th if there is room.

Drop me a PM if you are interested!

A Flipside Tale: Courage, Synchronicity, and the Technology of Magic

Hi all. Just to get us all in the flow of what we're in for, I thought I'd post an essay I finally finished on my Flipside experience last year. You can read the whole story below or link to an easier-to-read version here: www.tonyvigorito.com/blog/courage

En-joy!

Courage, Synchronicity, and the Technology of Magic

I have often been staggered by the forces of the ordinary that cajole the human experience into cowardice. Relentless mass-mediated daydreams croon lullabies to nightmare; meathook economic rackets hijack freedom with student loans, predatory credit, and eternal mortgages; narratives of responsibility harass the mind with financial planning, time-management, highly-effective habits; and illusions of security, insurance, and retirement prod us into proper place. Lurching through life in the midst of such clamor, is it any wonder that so many trade the tremendous for the trivial, that the ecstatic fantastic wow of existence dims into murk and shadow, flickering into fluorescence like some stepped-on plastic geranium?

But this is not to be some hand-wringing howl of quiet desperation. The walls are high, yes, the challenges are great, but today I’d like to invite an exploration of what it is that happens when this drear occasionally clears, when we see something, something that matters, something possessed not merely of meaning, but of magic? In a previous essay entitled Chaos, Collapse, and Synchronicity, I explored how synchronicity is likely to emerge during and after ego-shattering experiences. Because the ego demarcates the presumably phantasmic boundary between your consciousness and the rest of the universe, the experience of synchronicity can be understood to be the face of the perception of undivided unity. Here, I would like to venture beyond mild-mannered explanation and into wild-eyed exploration. In other words, if synchronicity is the perception of undivided unity, what is the technology of this magic?

In one of his most potent remarks, Arthur C. Clarke asserted that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Taking him at his word, then, the prickling astonishment that follows the experience of synchronicity—the sensation that something magical has just occurred—this is but an artifact of our limited technology of mind. Synchronicity is only astounding, in other words, when we persist in the delusion that we are distinct from the all and everything. Expanding consciousness beyond the limited point of view of oneself and into the unlimited point of view of undivided unity, this—as if it were so simple—this is the technology of magic.

And in case disclaimers need to be stated, I certainly have not mastered this magic. Very contrary, my daily failings would be the envy of any hypocrite. But I like to live out loud, and this full blast introspection is simply that. So now I want to tell you a story:

I was at a festival a year ago, and as festivals have long functioned as temporary autonomous zones where everyday boundaries are suspended, it should surprise no one to discover that synchronicity was pandemic at this festival. The festival in this case was Flipside, and I made it my business to blast around offering one-card tarot reflections to people that I met, just for fun and synchronicity. Late in the evening of the last night, I met a woman, and we talked for a few hours, and as we parted I offered her a one-card reading. She drew the Courage card, displaying a picture of a flower growing through a crack in a rock. As she was recently coming though a break-up of her own, this had a particularly poignant meaning for her, so much so, in fact, that I had an unprecedented impulse to tell her to keep the card, which she did—though upon reflection I must admit that I was single at the time and so was probably also just being a cheesedick trying to charm another meeting with a beautiful woman. But in any event, I never saw her again, and since I open my tarot deck nearly every day, I inadvertently compelled myself to contemplate the absence of courage not only from my deck, but also from my very own life.

But first, immediately after we bid each other good night, I walked toward the main road and happened across a friend of mine who was in his car leaving. The backstory is that he’d spent the night before with a woman and she’d sparked his heart and he’d hoped they’d hang out again but it was a festival after all and it just didn’t flow that way. It’s a common enough story, isn’t it? Despite the shallow exhortations of our beer-fisted and bikini-clad media, sexual intimacy is often a tremulous endeavor with potential both for enormous healing and enormous pain. In any event, I saw him leaving and I wished him safe travels and asked him how his night went. He responded with a shake of his head, dismay and defeat palloring his expression, issues of childhood abandonment clearly having been triggered. Myself, I was in a roaring good mood, so I slapped the hood of his car and told him to go park it and walk with me, which he did, parking about fifty yards up the road. As it turned out, however, by the time he had walked back toward me the woman whose encounter had sparked his healing crisis was wandering toward me as well from the other direction. I didn’t have to do anything but step out of the way as they met where I was standing, for life is not just about me, and here I was mere servant to their synchronicity.

Then, at a book signing a couple of weeks later during which I read from my second novel, Nine Kinds of Naked—which revolves around the theme of synchronicity—a young college student who happened to be in the store and hear my talk approached me afterwards and told me she had never heard of synchronicity and wanted to learn more about it. I was meeting friends for dinner, but I promised her I’d permit her to interrogate me over tea sometime, and we met for tea a few days later. It was a full and stimulating conversation, her wanting me to specify the precise metaphysical mechanism by which synchronicity occurs, and me explaining about non-duality and the illusion of separateness and how we’re all dreams in the mind of God and yes maybe so but maybe also mealy mysticism and ultimately what really matters is that there’s a correspondence between the inner world and the outer world and if it has meaning for an individual and clarifies their confusion and lights their path then it doesn’t really matter if we’re all temporarily stable matrices of energetic probabilities, knots in a doily, or concentrations of consciousness in an infinite field of experience. What matters is that the co-incidence had meaning for the individual, carrying a potential psychological breakthrough. Tarot, I say, is essentially intentional synchronicity, seeking a window into one’s psyche to focus a particular issue. I then proceeded to tell her about the woman I met at Flipside who pulled the Courage card and who I let have the card and how the co-incidence of the card served her—and me—so profoundly.

“Here,” I say, cavalier as I pull out my tarot deck. “Lemme show you how synchronicity works.”

“Hey,” she interrupts. “I have that deck.”

“You do?” I reply, surprised that someone who’s never heard of synchronicity would have a tarot deck.

“Well not really,” she concedes. “I received it as a Christmas present from my mom a couple of years ago. I actually cut the whole deck up and made a collage out of it.” She pauses. “Well not the whole deck,” she admits. “I kept my favorite card.”

“Which card?”

“The Growth card.”

“The Growth card,” I repeat, pausing as I scan my recollection of the deck. “I don’t think I know the Growth card. What’s on it?”

“Umm, it’s a picture of a flower growing through a crack in a rock.”

I cock my head incredulous. “That’s not the Growth card,” I say. “That’s the Courage card I was just telling you about, the card I gave away.”

She’s skeptical, and says she’s pretty sure it was the Growth card, and so I pull out the little book that accompanies the deck, demonstrating that it was indeed the Courage card that she kept, and also demonstrating that there is no such card as the Growth card. She’s amazed, as am I, and ultimately she was so impressed by the synchronicity that she went home, located her Courage card, and gifted it to me a few days later. It’s all shiny and new and really stands out in my beat-up old deck, and every time the card emerges I am reminded of this sequence of events and the contemplations that followed. Did you know, for example, that courage comes from the Latin root, cor, meaning heart? Courage is locating oneself in the heart rather than the head, and the expansiveness of the heart—in contrast to the constriction of the ego—this is love, and this is the space we truly share in common. Hammered out of boundaries and convinced it is alone, the ego can only blink stupidly at the grace, the immensity, and the magic of the heart’s experience.

Love, by the way, is not all hugs and backrubs. Primarily, I think, love is a prank. To borrow a theme I’m developing in my third novel: Love is a prank played on the ego by the spirit to teach the ego the one thing that it does not want to learn. In my own life, I’ve been scalded by love, and I’ve even been so tough boots as to believe that I needed to protect my heart. But as a result of my accidental contemplation of courage, I realized—or I remembered—that the heart is made of love, and love is indestructible, and only the cowardice of ego would presume that it requires protection. Actually, love is the only force capable of overcoming the ego, and so the ego would naturally like to avoid this prank, never having to learn to give up control. Courage is simply allowing this vulnerability, embracing the uncertainty, accepting that we may be hurt, yes, that it won’t always be easy, and that not only can we take it, but that we actually have no idea how much we can take. In this “Age of Uncertainty,” courage necessarily means being true to one’s heart, stepping towards a future uncertain rather than securing oneself to a predictable past. Courage is without caution, it is passion, it is a flee from security and into synchronicity. A flower growing through a crack in a rock, courage abandons the familiar and secure shell which protects us—and limits us—and dares us to emerge, to grow, and to trust that life will nurture us despite its challenges.

This expansion of consciousness is necessarily the reduction of ego, and is there anything more expansive than the feeling of love? It is not uncommon for lovers to recount the synchronicities of their meeting, to recognize a strangely inevitable magic in their rendezvous, and such magic is only the beginning, a dim glimmer of a spectacular sunrise, patient as we find our courage, tender as we surrender, daring us to give, to forgive, to reside more fully in our heart, to remember that we are never alone, and ultimately to realize that we are nothing if we are not servants to one another. It is love that erodes our ramparts, that relieves us of our armor, that tames the teeth protecting our trauma, and it is love that will heal us all the moment we have the courage to face the magic.

This is what I believe more than anything, and this is what gives me hope.

May you be ever overwhelmed by how many people you love~
Hi kids!
How excited are YOU?
Only 14 days till we're all back together at Flipside.
One big reason we can keep playing each year at Flat Creek is due to the efforts of a handful of solid human beings that volunteer time cleaning up and restoring the area.
Well my friends, now is the time to build this year's team.
I need some quality volunteers.
Check out he wiki:
http://www.burningflipside.com/wiki/Sign-off/Volunteering
See what job, day and time suits you.
Sign up on the wiki and please, let me know you did.
Not only will hold your head high knowing you did your part, but there's other perks to volunteering.
The party Monday night is AWESOME.
Only people that worked the festival are around, so more intimate, and yeah, pretty rowdy.
We close it out well, that's for damn sure.
Another perk.... not breaking down your stuff with a burn night hangover.
You leave after the masses, no traffic!
Imagine what it's like floating in the creek NOT surrounded by dirty hippies!
Sign up now.
Who knows.... you might have fun ;)

DIRECTIONS

From Dallas, head east on I-30 to Mount Pleasant. (About 115 miles depending where you are coming from).

Exit #160 to Highway 271/highway 49 and turn right. Watch your signs through Mount Pleasant and stay on 49.

Continue on Highway 49 approximately 17 miles to Daingerfield. Watch your signs through town and stay on 49. Continue on Highway 49 approximately 8 miles until you are just past Hughes Springs.

(There is a 4-Way stop at the intersection and it is right next to the Wildflower Inn and Cafe. Great place to stop for food. Decent price, large quantity, home made, damn tasty.) Turn right on FM 2612 Loop.

Continue about 0.5 miles. Turn left at the "Love Chapel Cemetary" sign. (The County Roads are not marked very well if at all out there. Just watch for the Love Chapel sign, it's easy to spot.)

Continue about 1 mile. Road will merge with another, stay left. Continue about another 0.5 miles. (You will go past CR 2987 on your right but not as far as the Love Chapel Church on the left.) Gate will be on your left and not easy to see until you are right on it. There is a green "Underground Cable" box very close, watch for it.

People from other locations, use the intersection of Highway 49 and FM 2612 as your way point. It is just south east of Hughes Springs and north west of Avinger. Find your best route to that location.

yall will love this spot!!!

thanks,
the Morningside Tribe

I need a couple more trustworthy people that i know personally to help work the door, i will pay you for your time...pm me if interested...thanks

if you are wanting to do some deco, pm me, if you got stuff to sell, pm me, blah blah, pm me...if you have art you want to showcase, pm me..tye dyed sheets please!!!!!

things to remember when heading out: spread the word

the store is a bit far from the campgrounds, i would advise you do your shopping & stuff before heading to the campgrounds, plus the road in is small, we dont want alotta in & out traffic...

It's about that time. Flipside is a couple weeks away. At this point,
people don't have much time left to make plans or ask off from work or
get plane tickets or anything else. Soon, everyone with a spare ticket
is going to start trying to sell it.

If you have a spare ticket, go to Bob's list now. Find someone who
looks like they would contribute to our collective experience and
contact them. If you wait another week, you'll be dangerously close to
the point where you're out 80 bucks and some poor soul is out the
experience just because you decided to slack.

the few people who still actually want to go. Do yourself a favor, act
now. I got stuck with a ticket I couldn't find a buyer for a few years
ago. I run Bob's list and I couldn't find anyone to buy my spare
Bob's list is in no way affiliated with AAR, LLC. It's my personal

Hello ALL!!! An e-mail went out to all the leads of every camp on the registry earlier this week to make sure that their Registration was checked as final. If this is not done, your camp may not be placed due to the fact that Placement doesn't see it until it goes final. If you have yet to register your camp, well, FORGET IT NOW!!! Just kiddin', stop freakin' out man................OK.................... Done?

You can still register your camp up to May 1st, but please realize that most of the prime camping spots (North Terrace, South Terrace, Mezzanine) are completely full. Please play nice, we volunteer for this (can you believe that?) You still get in, so don't worry. It's not about the club ya bring to Flipside, it's about the community as a whole. WE ARE ALL TOGETHER!!! If you planned to stay at your camp all weekend, then get out there and stop being a SPECTATOR!!! Have some fun. Meet some new people. Have some dip!!! Remember Citizens, it is a No Spectator policy in the spirit of TTITD (Burning Man). Thanks for being part of the best community since the Manson Family!!!

Flipside Theme Camp Registration closes on May 1st. You can go to http://www.burningflipside.com/ , log in to your account and go to Theme Camps - Directory.

Click on "view camp profile" under your camp name.

Click "edit/review" by "clicking here".

At the bottom of your registration, check the "final" checkbox and Submit.

Then check the Camp Directory to ensure that your camp is seen.

Any problems from there and you can e-mail us at themecampplacement09@burningflipside.com

Shiva Shakti Presents
The Immerse Tour Campout

KILOWATTS LIVE PA
.:GAIAN MIND:. .:NATIVE STATE RECORDS:. .:PHILADELPHIA:.

James Watts is the mind behind KiloWatts and his many different projects and styles. His work embraces the bulk of electronic genres, including breaks, IDM, techno, and downtempo. His fluency in piano is evident throughout his work, as is his penchant for jazzy riffs, intelligent structure, wistful melodies, and an often cheeky take on the current state and history of electronic music as a whole. His album “Ground State” is out on Native State Records, home to fellow pioneers Bluetech and Shen. It’s a collection of sweaty psychedelic downtempo grooves, churning molasses-thick basslines, and undulating synthetic sonorous mandalas. KiloWatts has albums on Artificial Music Machine that are full of visionary dimensions, fusing together a dexterous knowledge of sound synthesis, deep emotional articulation, and solid melodic intuition. Peppered throughout these monumental statements are releases with class labels such as Harmonious Discord, Thoughtless Music, and his own outlet, KiloWatts Music, that celebrate his adept technical expertise, often bringing a whirlwind of mindblowing digital wizardry in the form of glitches and edits.

He began making music in the early 90s with DOS-based trackers and releasing them on BBSs through the demoscene. He was a driving force in the foundation of Soulseek Records, a netlabel celebrating independent musicians during a time of heavy backlash from the record industry against filesharing. The label helped show that independent electronic musicians can use file sharing to their advantage by promoting and collaborating with each other. The label was born among a flurry of netlabels, many which still exist today.

An ever-growing list of projects and collaborations exists. Skeetaz, with breakbeat cohort Bil Bless brings hard-hitting digital glitched-out psychedelic funk. His collaboration with singer Peter Van Ewijk is a mystical ride with vocals and guitar, nested atop edgy electronica. With Tanner Ross, an eerie style of dark techno is born under the name Voodeux for Dirtybird’s techno sublabel Mothership. Fellow Philadelphian MC Amagine delivers consciousness-driven motifs in their digital glitch-hop project called Super Galactic Expansive.

ALIGNING MINDS LIVE PA
.:88:. .:Aleph Zero:. .:Washington DC:.

Aligning Minds is the unique collaboration of producers Daniel Merrill and Michael Folk, who use sound to achieve a mutual vision. Ethereal and dubby, uplifting and haunting, their music winds its way through the imaginative souls of its listeners, offering a deep exploration of mood and emotional atmosphere. Focused on unifying electronic music through diverse influence, their sound fuses elements of genres like downtempo, dubstep, breakbeat and idm, but without the need for formulaic restrictions. Through both studio work and live performances, Aligning Minds have been gaining interest and support from all over the global spectrum of electronic music. Intent on reaching a musical standpoint of balance and harmony between stylistic ideas, they move forward as a musical force with an ethic of positive growth and change. Daniel Merrill and Michael Folk are signed artists represented as Aligning Minds via the multimedia label known as Psymbolic.

THE GREAT MUNDANE LIVE PA
.:Psymbolic:. .:Chicago:.

Shaped by a "Do It Yourself" culture, Jeffrey Acciaioli was driven by his love of music to create the moniker The Great Mundane at first to only satisfy himself. Born and raised in Farmington Hills, Michigan he was exposed and later influenced by genres such as classical, jazz, bossa nova, hip-hop, and electronica. His broad range of favorites and training allow us to enjoy his "one of a kind" sound that is anything but mundane. The Great Mundane's twisting textures, catchy drum whips, and unique soundscapes leave us with a melodic collage that is unlike anything we've heard before. The Great Mundane was first introduced into the Chicago music scene before taking his passion and energy nation wide. Soon international ears were falling upon his unique sounds and requesting his talents. Recognized and appreciated by his untraditional sounds, The Great Mundane worked with Belladonna Records to release two limited time EP's and shortly thereafter signed as an artist to release his debut album "When Falls Arrive" with Psymbolic--sounds.

ARTIFICIAL LIFE PRESERVER LIVE PA
.:Psymbolic:. .:Aritificial Music Machine:. .:Austin:.

Artificial life preserver has been working to preserve algorythms that behave like living systems since 2005. Insect-like drones and cell based beats drive environmental mixes of organized time units. Drawing from his experience with Texas Psy-trance act Init-String, ALP will bring you a night of abstract, glitchy downtempo that could only come from a mind such as this.Artificial Life Preserver's debut album Automata was released in December of 2007 by long time friends of the cause Psymbolic Sounds, followed by a compilation release of Kricket Dub on Indyroute-Austin in February of 2008. ALP can be heard at clubs, festivals, and radio stations in a town near you.

In the coming days, we will be announcing an all star cast of local talent to accompany this already stacked line-up of live electronic music.
this evening...

The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio has issued a
red flag warning... which is in effect from 9 am this morning to
8 PM CDT this evening.

Expect strong 20-foot level winds of 20 to 25 mph today... with
relative humidities falling into the upper teens by late this
afternoon. The winds will diminish to below 15 mph by early this
evening... but a dry air mass will remain in place through Sunday.

A red flag warning means weather conditions will promote fires
that are difficult to control across the warned area. A red flag
issued by local officials.

HELLO GRILLED CHEESE ENTHUSIASTS!

It is with nearly-orgasmic pleasure that I tell you we have solidified the date for the

2nd Annual Austin GRILLED CHEESE INVITATIONAL!

And that date is SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 2009 (The Curds of March)

http://grilledcheeseinvitational.com/austin/

Registration is now open!!

What is a grilled cheese invitational? What's new for this year?

For the second year, the Grilled Cheese Invitational will be happening in Austin, Texas. The winners of this regional will be offered places to compete in the National Invitational in Los Angeles in April, and the highest scoring sandwich will win 1 plane ticket to sunny southern California for the event. There will be trophies. There will be cheese. It will be amazing.

Details about location will be available soon (it is an invitational after all), but do mark your calendar and let everyone you know to mark their respective calendars.

There will be only 40 competitors, no exceptions. So before you go to register, be thinking about what category you will compete in, what the name of your sandwich will be, and whether your sandwich will be vegetarian. (All of this information will be required at registration.)

Note: If you only plan on eating, there's no need to register. Only register if you are going to compete.

Categories:

The Missionary Position: Standard bread, standard butter, and standard cheese.
The Kama Sutra: Exotic or standard bread, butter, and cheese plus additional ingredients.
The Honey Pot: Exotic or standard bread, butter, and cheese, but a sandwich that is sweet in general, or would best be served as dessert.
Lambada: This is a new regional addition. Quesadillas!

Doors to the event will open at 6:00pm and the grilling will start promptly at 7:10pm. All those planning on grilling should be there and ready at 6:30pm.

ITEMS/RULES YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF:

1) All sammiches must be pre-registered. There will be no on site registration WHATSOEVER!

2) There will be a maximum of 40 competitors, no exceptions.

3) Each competitor will be allowed only 30 minutes to grill per category. So save yourself the time and do as much prep-work ahead of time. You can compete in more than one category.

4) All contestants must present their sandwiches on the official plates provided. This is to insure that every sandwich gets it's 20 votes turned in. You can have additional items with your sandwich (pamphlets, drinks, etc), but they MUST fit on the plate provided.

5) All those looking to eat sammiches must get them at the judging station and not at the cooking area or by the chefs. Competitors should provide their own runners who will go and get sandwiches and bring them to the judging station. NO EXCEPTIONS. We will have some volunteer runners to assist, but the competitors should not rely on us to have one for you.

7) While we are tabulating the results, there will be entertainment including Arc Attack!

Please note, all other rules still apply. Please note there are a few regional differences to the rules, such as only 40 competitors and the supplies you will be provided are different. Once you sign up you will be sent a full list of rules with the minute changes.
http://grilledcheeseinvitational.com/rules.html

P.S. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
It takes a lot of work to make this thing happen. We need help in all sorts of areas including the ID checking, Merchandise Table, Data entry, clean up and set up. It's a really fun time and you might get paid your weight in cheese. If you would like to give us a hand in putting this ridiculous spectacle on, go ahead and email me at grilledcheeseaustin@gmail.com Please indicate which department you'd be willing to help with.

Who will be the ULTIMATE grilled cheese champion? YOU DECIDE!

I hate to throw them away but I can't think of what to do with them other than the normal floor installation. They are mostly off white or tan. I can get a count if you need a better idea of how much is there, very roughly a foot and a half stacked up of unbroken ones.
Fire Breathing Survey

A couple months ago, a boston area man entered the hospital with burns
from learning fire breathing. Unfortunate for him, but the accident
may lead to some good. The attending surgeon has taken an interest in
fire breathers and has been working with NAFAA to produce some clear
information regarding fire breathing and the various fire arts. We
ask that you support this effort in any way you can, so that we can
benefit from the results of actual, scientific research in our area.
The first step is a survey for fire breathers. If you have breathed
fire in any capacity, you are encouraged to fill it out. If you have
not, please forward to any fire breathers you may know. Here's the
link:

I will bring my decks with me as well as some other equipment I may need to setup. So don't worry about the sound to much. Unless you already have some set Up. The only thing I'm lacking at this point is the SUBS!

So I was reading a post on the craigslist musicians section complaining about the totally corrupt state of SXSW and wondering to myself if we couldn't do a good job of at least partially restoring that festival to a bit of it's former glory. I mean it started out as a place where unsigned musicians would find a&r reps and get themselves signed. Now it's just bands that are already signed showcasing for the rest of the industry to masturbate to while counting the days till the Back Street Boys or Menudo return to usher in the final musical apocalypse. A day when David Hasselhoff* will rein over the throws of prozac enabled upwardly mobile youth, leading them slowly to some car dealership in the hill country for the final credit check of their empty souls.

But I digress....

My point was couldn't we find a nice venue for a few of the true stragglers to come to and shake their special parts at us? Can't we all just come together and embrace a good idea gone so horribly wrong that the likes of us have to set it right? Can't we put up a few of the rejected geniuses in our homes and narrowly avoid being arrested with them in the hopes that this town can get a tiny piece of it's former respect back. Can't we sacrifice some couch space and ignore all the burned silverware, missing pets, horrible smells, bad haircuts, wrecked cars, and warrants for arrest and get some good music for a change. I mean I will personally dig up the body of Bill Hicks and carry it around with me for a week and maybe even sodomize myself with a femur if that is what it takes to motivate people.

But again....I digress

My point was more clearly that there are even many musician-loser-top-ramen-eatin-talented-freaks among us who deserve to take advantage of this influx of rich, soulless, money vomiting executives and get some exposure. And we've got the means to do it. And what's more we owe it to this fine town and the world to at least try to make this place the kind of place that a Butthole Surfer might be born.
be split in half. You get the largest room with its own bath. Spacious
and sunny commons area--spacious enough for your own furniture, or
equipment if you play or DJ, and definitely enough to entertain
guests. And there is a spare room for whatever. Central AC/heat,
garage and driveway, big backyard with a deck, plenty of trees, close
to downtown and the river.

I have a dog, so you and whatever animals you have, if you have any,
have to get along with her. No smoking in the house unless it's green,
coming from a hookah, or kept in your room. I don't bitch at anyone
for not being as clean as I am, but don't leave messes for me to clean
up on the regular. Other than that, as long as we're likeminded (I'm a
bit of a freak) and have some similar tastes, do whatever you want,
I'm as easy to get along with as a village bicycle.

Artists, burners, bar people, party people, musicians and DJ's,
hippies and hipsters--all need apply.

But what I'm really stretching and hoping for is someone to pick up
the lease, which will be up in May, in which case I'd be living in
your house and under your law.

Email me at brandonshade@gmail.com any time between now and December
31st and we can chat or you can just come by and check the place out.

Hey! Apologies in advance for the multiple cross-post, but...

RubyRico Productions (the people who brought you the Broken Clock Cabaret/Tom Waits Peepshow) are holding auditions for a new cabaret! This show will be a weird-funny-racy-grimy-sweet fairy tale/peepshow with live music, dance, comedy and some audience participation, and will be performed every weekend in April 2009.
* AUDITIONS WILL BE ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1pm-4pm. *

Each weekend of the show will feature different variety acts:
We are looking for clowns, puppeteers, jugglers, weirdos, acrobats, hoopers, storytellers, sword swallowers, safe & humane animal acts, magicians, poi spinners, contortionists, vaudevillians and villains -- if you can work it into an entertaining act, we want to see it! (But sadly, because the show will be inside a nightclub/ theater, we cannot accommodate aerial work or fire acts.)
* AUDITIONS FOR VARIETY ACTS WILL BE HELD FROM 2pm TO 4pm. *

We're also looking for 1 or 2 male dancers with the following goodies:
-- technical modern dance proficiency
-- a capacity for inventive improvisation, both physical and verbal
-- an instinct for comedy and expressive theatricality (you have to be willing to look goofy and ham it up)
-- willingness to take off yer clothes, but only down to the scivvies
For dancers the rehearsal schedule will be intensive throughout January, February and March, but we're flexible and will do everything we can to accommodate time conflicts.
* AUDITIONS FOR MALE DANCERS WILL BE HELD FROM 1pm TO 2pm. *

Each auditioning act or dancer will have a 5-minute slot to audition.
Please bring a prepared piece to perform.
Music should be either on CD or on mp3 player.
Dancers will also be asked to learn and perform a short combination.
There is no rehearsal pay, but all performers will be compensated for performances.

Auditions will be held at The Circus Barn, a rehearsal facility on the east side of town on the way to the airport.
6404 HERGOTZ LANE, AUSTIN, TX
Getting there is a little tricky. If you need directions, please email ruby@rubyrico.com.

This is an open call, so there's no need to RSVP. However, if you have questions or want directions to the space, please feel free to email ruby@rubyrico.com, or call 480-0799.
Thanks! Ellen
